The Origin Composting Toilet: Built for Life Off the Grid
The Origin composting toilet is engineered for life off the grid — whether you're boondocking for weeks at a stretch or heading out for a weekend in the RV. Our patented trap door diverts urine away from solids, the push-button electric agitator mixes after every use, and the liquid sensor tells you exactly when the bottle needs emptying — no guessing, no mess.

Compact by Design
At 16" wide, 15" deep, and 18.375" tall, the Origin is one of the smallest composting toilets on the market. Its front- and top-access design means it can slide into a cabinet, tuck into a wet bath, or install flush against a wall without giving up usability. Clean lines and a uniform curved profile mean it looks intentional in a modern van build or a renovated tiny home bathroom — not like an afterthought.
Easy to Maintain
The solids bin removes in seconds — bag it, compost it, or dispose of it per local regulations. The urine bottle lifts straight out for quick dumping. Smooth surfaces throughout mean wipe-downs take moments, not effort. Add coco coir or sphagnum peat moss to the solids bin, and you're ready to go again.
Never Get Caught Off Guard
The urine bottle holds 2.4 gallons — generous for solo travelers, and manageable for couples who may need to empty it every couple of days. When it's getting close, the liquid sensor illuminates the side button so you know before it becomes a problem. It's a small detail that makes a real difference on the road.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need to empty the OGO Origin?
The urine bottle holds 2.4 gallons and typically needs emptying every 2–3 days for a single user, or every 1–2 days for two people. The liquid sensor will light up the side button when it's nearly full. The solids bin lasts approximately 25–30 uses before it needs to be emptied and the coco coir replaced.
Does the OGO Origin require electricity?
Yes — the electric agitator runs on 12V DC power, making it well-suited for RVs, vans, and boats with existing 12V systems. A power adapter (sold separately) is required if you're connecting to a standard 110V household outlet.
Does the OGO Origin smell?
No — when used correctly, the Origin is essentially odor-free. The patented trap door urine diverter separates liquid and solid waste at the source, which is what causes odor in traditional composting toilets. The vent hose further directs any residual air outside the space.
What medium should I use in the solids bin?
OGO recommends coco coir, available directly from OGO. Sphagnum peat moss is also compatible. Both absorb moisture and support the composting process. Avoid using soil or potting mix, as they don't perform as well in this application.
How hard is the OGO Origin to install?
Most installs take under an hour. The Origin mounts with four screws, connects to a 12V power source, and requires a small hole for the vent hose. Detailed instructions are included, and OGO's Resource Center has additional guides and video support.
Can the OGO Origin be used in cold weather?
Yes. The Origin performs well in cold climates as long as the unit doesn't freeze. In below-freezing conditions, the composting process will slow significantly, but the toilet remains functional. Many full-time RVers and off-grid cabin dwellers use the Origin year-round without issue.
